This guide will help you understand how you can use the chkdsk Repair command on Windows 11 and gives you an overview of Check Disk.

CHKDSK or Check Disk is a system tool and command in Windows. It monitors the health of your disks and fixes physical and logical file system errors. This tool is recommended to use if your computer has boot errors or files getting corrupted. If you

Though Windows has different system tools or utilities to optimize your computer performance, chkdsk is one of the Windows commands. Check disk can be run by chkdsk repair command, which can be run in Command Prompt or cmd or PowerShell.

Using chkdsk Command in Command Prompt:

  1. First, press “Start” or the Window key. Then type “cmd” and then click “Run as administrator.

2. Type “chkdsk” command and then press the “Enter” key.

Note: As there are no drives highlighted, the Check Disk will only run in read-only mode.

3. If you’re fixing a drive, type “chkdsk d: /f”, and then press the “Enter” key.

Note: In this example, D stands for the external D drive, and /f command scans the drive and fixes it.

Using chkdsk Command in PowerShell

  1. First, press “Start” or the “Window key”, type “Windows PowerShell” and then click “Run as administrator.”

CHKDSK Parameters Meaning

There are different chkdsk parameters that instruct the chkdsk exactly what to do with the command and the chosen disk volume.  Here is a list of chkdsk arguments and their functions:

  • /f – This command will fix any error found on the disk.
  • /r – This command will locate bad sectors and retrieve readable information from them. It implies /f when /scan is not specified.
  • /x – This will imply /f, and if necessary, it will be forced to remove the drive..
  • /scan – This will run an online scan (the volume does not need to be unmounted) but does not fix it.
  • /perf  – This will speed up the scan and use more system resources.  It is used with /scan.
  • /spotfix – This will temporarily disable the volume in order to address the issues reported in the log file.
  • /? – This help switch is use with the chkdsk command to get more information about the chkdsk command listed above and additional chkdsk options.

CHKDSK in Different Method

  1. Press the “Win+E” key to open the File Explorer.
  2. Go to “This PC” and right click on the drive that you want to check. In this example, it is the C drive.

3. In the C drive, right-click and select “Properties” in the option.

4. Once clicked, the “Properties” will appear. Click on the “Tools” tab.

5. In the “Tools” tab, under the  “Error checking” section, click on the “Check” button.

6. This will show if there’s an error found in the drive. If there’s no error, it will show “You don’t need to scan this drive”. But if you want to scan it, click the “Scan drive”.

7. Once the “Scan drive” is clicked, the scan will now begin.
