How to Fix Scanner Not Working Issue on Windows 11

Nothing is more frustrating when you need to scan a document to find that your scanner is not working. This article will show you different solutions that will fix the issue in no time.

Windows 11 is the latest major release of Microsoft’s operating system. It introduced new features and designs to this version of Windows, such as an improved user interface, colorways, and start menu.

On the other hand, you should also consider hardware since new software is getting higher hardware requirements to function correctly.

According to Microsoft, your current printers and scanners should continue functioning normally because Windows 11 is built on the strong foundations of Windows 10 software. Any compatibility problems will be caused by the hardware of your PC rather than the peripherals.

However, windows 11 users reported recently facing issues with their Scanner Not Working.

Some users cannot engage with the scanner, depending on the issue. In contrast, others see an error message that says, “Can’t communicate with scanner.”

Why Does your Scanner Not Working?

There are several variations of the Windows 11 scanner not working issue. It affects scanners from all major brands, including Epson, Canon, HP, and more, rather than just one specific brand.

Most of the time, loose cables and connections are the causes of the issue. Sometimes you accidentally unplug cables when you move different objects from your space.

Another cause could be outdated drivers. When your PC automatically installs device drivers, sometimes interruptions might affect the installation process.

You should also consider hardware issues. If your scanner itself is faulty, you can’t fix it with any troubleshooting methods regarding software and compatibility fixes.

Suppose you’re one of the users facing this issue. In that case, there’s no need to worry because there are many solutions. Below are simple methods to quickly fix the scanner not working problem on windows 11.

Check Cable Connections

As mentioned earlier, cable connections are mostly the cause of this problem. Fortunately, these problems are the quickest and most straightforward issues to solve.

It’s possible that the cords are too loose or you failed to connect them correctly. Windows may recognize the scanner more accurately if the connections are plugged in correctly.

Ensure all cables are hooked to the appropriate ports and not frayed or damaged.

Additionally, ensure your PC is connected to the same WiFi network if using a wireless scanner.

Once the scanner is linked to the same network as the PC, it should appear in the computer’s list of devices.

Restart your PC

You open and close different programs and applications whenever you use your computer. In some cases, there are background processes that you did not close fully.

These processes could cause interruption when you try to open a new program or connect peripherals. As a result, temporary data will eat up so much RAM on your PC that it could cause your scanner not to be detected by your PC.

A quick restart will refresh your system since it will clear out any background processes and slightly improve the performance of your computer.

To do so,

Click the Start Menu and then click on the power button.

On the context menu, select “Restart”.

Wait for your PC to reboot and try replugging your scanner to see if that resolves the issue.

Use Hardware Troubleshooter to Fix the Scanner is Not Working Issue

Windows 11 has a built-in troubleshooter that you can use for any problems you are experiencing. It will search your hardware for any issues and automatically try to fix them for you.

Here’s how to do it:

First, press the shortcut keys “Windows + X” on your keyboard and then select “Windows PowerShell (Admin)” on the context menu.

Now, copy and paste the command below, then hit “Enter” on your keyboard to run the command:

Fix Scanner Not Working Issue by Updating Drivers

In a simple way to say it, a driver is a link between your hardware and your system. In this case, your scanner has one as well. If your scanner’s driver is outdated or corrupt, the system might not be able to connect to your scanner effectively.

To do so,

First, launch Run by pressing “Windows + R”.

Next, type “devmgmt.msc” on the textbox and hit “Enter”.

Run

The device manager window will appear. Expand the “Imagine Devices category”, right-click on the scanner you’re using, and click “Update Driver”.

Device Manager

Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the process to finish.

Once done, restart your PC to apply changes and verify if the Scanner Not Working Issue still exists on Windows 11.

Nowadays, scanners are helpful at work or school. It is frustrating when you experience it not functioning when you need it most. Hopefully, the methods mentioned above solved the problem quickly.
